Monteverdi only Monteverdi, always Monteverdi

A very good and dramatic version of this masterpiece. I have made a scenical production of it (with Cappella Agostino Steffani) in the Herrenhausen Festival in Hannover. I never had so many people coming at the end of the performances with tears in their eyes. I had chosen to make that Madrigal twice: at the end of the first part and once again in a different scenic version to conclude the production of the 8th Madrigal Book. It is one of the most touching pieces I have ever made as regisseur.

Godly voices, smooth adaptive continua, amazing lively interpretation, a joy for the ear. Bravo. Not forgetting the genius of Monteverdi who built in so many ingenious constructions and haunting harmonies (and disharmonies).

And a very good morning to you! What a wonderful start to my day. 💆🎶 I have synaesthesia and I feel and see sounds. Some of these harmonic intervals will keep me smiling all day. Thank you xx

veggio, penso, ardo, piango; et chi mi sface

move 'l dolce et l'amaro ond'io mi pasco;
una man sola mi risana et punge;

e perché 'l mio martir non giunga a riva,

La guerre est mon état, pleine de douleur et de colère ;

Se trouvent la douceur et l’amertume dont je me repais ;

Mille fois le jour je meurs et mille fois je renais ;

Now, while the sky and earth and wind are still,
And the birds and beasts are held in sleep,
Night’s starry chariot makes its round
And in its bed calm lies the ocean.

I watch, brood, burn and weep; and she, my undoing,
Is ever before me, causing such sweet sorrow:
Warfare is my state, full of anger and pain,
And only thoughts of her bring me peace.

Thus from a single pure and welling source
Come the sweetness and suffering on which I feed;
A single hand both heals and wounds me.

And, since I see no end to my anguish,
A thousand times a day I die and am reborn,
So far am I from my salvation’s source.

Stunning interweaving of the polar oppositions expressed in the Italian text (with an appended English translation) with the musical genius flowing thru inspired Monteverdi modalities! Spirit soars, heart breaks, Life flows!

Their version clocks in at nearly 4 minutes under Concerto Italiano's. Not a criticism. I like all versions of this madrigal I've heard. Just pointing out the wide variation in performance.

Baroque music shows us that the Holy Trinity inspired Western music and gave us the structure within which musical expression rightly functions. Peace flows from order.
