This is such a straight to the point video. I’ve have a modded N54 335i before and want another one. Gotta remind myself what I’m getting back into again 😅

The newest N54 is 14 years old. Yes, if you wish to make a 14-17 year old car with likely around 150k on the clock “reliable”, you’ll need to do some maintenance. I do not recommend just throwing parts at it, though.

So right on. Seen a few of these issues on mine. As well, the issues you describe are consistent with the reports on many BMW fan sites about the n54. However, I believe it's worth making your n54 engine reliable to have one of the best engines of all time. Voted best engine 5 years in a row by International Engine of the Year Awards. Also for 3 years by Ward's Ten Best Engines. The n54 is a very tunable engine as well that can easily make a lot more hp with minor modifications.

when i bought my 335i n54 it needed, valve cover which i did, coils n plugs, one injector, OFHG, charge pipe exploded lol and complete brake work. Now i need a rear axle seal and oil pan gasket but its not leaking too bad. also a plastic piece was replaced that controls the air/fuel mixture. runs great though and always a joy to drive.

Short and informative, ty. One info I am yet to find anywhere though: does this list apply to stock or almost stock (say 400 chp) N54's, or mostly (heavily) tuned ones. Asking cuz I'm considering a e92 335i but I certainly don't want to constantly worry about this and that part failing and potentially getting stranded, not to mention the big costs associated with it

That cost more than I thought it was going to Ngl

I am about to buy 2007 335i tomorrow for 10k

79k mileage, 1 owner with clean car fax and good maintainence. After I watch yOur video I kinda scare from it :) now i don’t know what to do because I drove the car yesterday and it drives very smooth

no idea what the big deal is. i have a buck fiddy on my 2008 335xi n54. i did the oil filter housing gaskets once, the instrument cluster once, some front end bushings once. 2 windshields, 1 set of winter tires and 1 set of summer tires. that's it. tires are the biggest expense. and the thing still runs like a screaming raped ape. 3.4 0 to 60 and i get it over 150 at least once a week. i'll race anyone from anchorage to fairbank in february. one of the 10 best engines ever made.

Tbh the first thing you should do after you buy one is wall nut blast and a compression test and leak down test no point in placing money in a engine that could be on its way out thats what i do when i get a pre purchase inspection before I buy someones car I never truth the seller no matter how clean it looks

I thought the N54 uses a timing chain, belt breaking shouldn't be fatal.
