These are squarely aimed at mine sites, the agri sector and government agencies. They will be taking these in bulk over vehicles like Hilux and Ranger. Well done Mr Toyota, very strategic. A few domestic customers are not Toyota's concern or target market.

This 2.8L Cruiser reminds me of the 70series Prado that came with the 2L TE or 1KZ TE and an autobox. Great move as this setup opens up the cruiser to a lot more people. I’m also glad they’ve kept the V8 and V6 petrol, at least here in Africa. Long live the 70.

Not a Toyota guy myself, but the fact that Toyota did not try to put a bunch of Tech in the new 76 is most likely to help with reliability. I say this because a lot of new vehicles from all the manufacturers seem to have way too much tech out of the gate and yet have so many problems with the extra tech added. If there is anything I have learned with my old 1993 WD21 Pathfinder, it is that simplicity generally keeps things reliable.

Should have just brought back the 1HD-FTE, updated the platform for emissions and still have a solid vehicle. I don't think the 2.8 will give the same performance for as long. A smaller engine working harder for longer will cause grief at some point.

Fantastic, honest review on 1 drive n no 4wd. Shocking that they have not changed the rear wheel alignment

This iteration is the perfect balance between old-school mechanics and modern creature comforts. A winner for sure

Bought mine 76 GXL 3 months ago, knowing the specifications of new 2.8L and seeing it online, and now after watching this video, it makes me happy that I did buy the previous generation one.

Thanks for the intro Ronny!
2.8 in the LC doesn't sound right but:
If the real world performance is on par with the on-paper figures, lack of performance should not feared then.
Fuel consumption should be better and is a huge consideration for me. Apart from the obvious saving in cost, carrying less fuel on long back country trips etc is a big plus.
2.8 engine is relatively speaking much less complex and likely cheaper to maintain than the V8.
Nothing can compare the the sound track of the V8 thou, especially the 4 pot! Something which will always be sad!
Excited! 🍺

They should have used a 6 cyl turbo instead, just my thoughts

I am driving a BJ70 3.4l 4 cyl n/a diesel since 20 years now and yes, i would absolutely love to have a brand new 2.8l 76 for daily driving and traveling. It is not as good looking as all the old narrow nose models but way better looking than the previous wide nose imho.

Great review. Ive been in the auction industry for 37 years. Driven everything. Vehicle of choice? Landcruiser. (You can see them in my profile photo). Ive had/have 40, 60, 80, 100, 200, 75, 78, 79. Had a 300. Hated it. Theres some dumb stuff eg position of the fuel filter and rear tailgate. With the new 2.8 70 out, i wanted to see if incould live with the 2.8 and auto so i bought an SR hilux. Frankly, i think toyota are taking the piss out of us. The 70 used to be an axe. It had one purpose. Now its a hilux with a live front axle that toyota couldnt be bothered to correct (track issue). You get a 1984 body with a softer bonnet etc etc. and its $20, 000 more than the hilux. I dunno mate but seriously… am i enjoying my first hilux? Yes. Which models do I miss? The 80 with the wuad valve turbo and the 2006 70 with that beautiful 6 cyl. Lucky i have my 1979 fj45 with a genuine 112, 000km on the clock to remind me of what a real landcruiser is. Keep up the good work mate

What a great car! The motor has been well tested, so many tradesmen running around with there hilux loaded to the brink they never get unloaded and tow excavators regularly, i am one of those people, mine is the destroked 2.4l wormate version in 4x4 230000 kms, it runs absolutly perfectly and the auto is the best i have driven in a 4 cyl 4x4 diesel

According to Toyota, the 2.8 now has a new balance shaft, bigger oil sump and pump, better cooling and of course different intercooler.

I think picking the V8 or 2.8 will depend on how it's used, taking the auto out of the equation. If you intend to keep your setup relatively light (for a 70), then the 2.8 will probably be fine. If you're going to stretch your 79 and tow 2.5-3t behind it, you will need the V8

I have been driving a four cylinder, auto 70 series for eleven years. It's a 1991 70 Prado.
It's only a 2.4 but if you drive it right, it's fine. Given a change I will pop a 1HDFT into it though. I just love straight sixes.

Sad we don’t get any of these legends in north America

I would say it's a good buy. I have an older Ranger, 4.0 petrol, and the newer 2.2 ecoboost has way more power. Plus, better gas mileage. With the new tech catching up, I think you're right. V8 is going to the wind. Still, gotta love that roar😋 My 2003 Isuzu MUX/Rodeo has the power button and second start. The power button shortens the auto trans shift and increases rpm before shifting. Great for power offroad. The car has a touchy pedal, so the 2nd gear start is good in slick conditions. Nice review, Ronny!😊

I don’t care how much of a legend it is, it has no place to rest the elbows.

Hey T, this is not a technical challenge to make that happen.

I think it is a great addition to the range, it's just not for me. I also think test driving them around empty you will hardly notice a difference. We'll see the issues when people start kitting them out, loading them up and towing stuff around the country like we do with our manual v8s. I'd also then like to see a fuel economy comparison to v8, I bet the v8 will be better.

I really like this. 4 cyl efficiency, 70 series offroad ability. Enough power for my needs.
