Without a buffer zone between the two superpowers we risk total annilation. The risks of a simple mistake leading to total Amageddon are obviously far greater when you only have few minutes to react to a possible first use strike. The USA would still have this buffer zone, it is called Europe and the Atlantic ocean - it is Russia and Europe that will pay the costs of such a mistake, not the USA.
