Floods blamed on degradation in Soroti District

The Ministry of Water and Environment is intensifying the demarcation of wetlands around the country. In eastern Uganda’s Soroti district, the team has launched the demarcation in Opiai swamp.
Deo Kabaalu the regional wetlands coordinator for eastern Uganda says human activity, especially rice growing has depleted thousands of hectares of swampy land in the Teso region and is partly responsible for the current flooding and shortage of water in the dry season.
