Το Μοναστηράκι είναι κεντρική συνοικία της Αθήνας γύρω από την Πλατεία Μοναστηρακίου, η οποία εκτείνεται στη νότια πλευρά της οδού Ερμού, από το ύψος της Πλατείας Μητροπόλεως έως την Πλατεία Θησείου. Γειτνιάζει με τις συνοικίες του Ψυρρή, της Πλάκας και του Θησείου.
Η ονομασία της προέρχεται από την παλιά εκκλησία της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου Αθήνας, που βρίσκεται χτισμένη επί της πλατείας, και παλαιότερα ήταν μετόχι μοναστηριού και συγκεκριμένα, της Μονής Καρέα στον Υμηττό. Στην Πλατεία Μοναστηρακίου δεσπόζει επίσης το παλιό Τζαμί Τζισταράκη που έχει κατασκευαστεί το 1759 και το οποίο σήμερα στεγάζει παράρτημα του Μουσείου Λαϊκής Τέχνης.
Η περιοχή του Μοναστηρακίου εθεωρείτο διαχρονικά μέρος της συνοικίας του Ψυρρή, η οποία έφτανε μέχρι το Θησείο και τα όρια της Πλάκας. Άρχισε να υφίσταται ως ξεχωριστή συνοικία μετά την διάνοιξη της οδού Ερμού το 1835.

Monastiraki is the central district of Athens around Monastiraki Square, which extends to the south side of Ermou Street, from the height of Mitropoleos Square to Thissio Square. It is adjacent to the districts of Psyrri, Plaka and Thiseio.
Its name comes from the old church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Athens, which is built on the square, and was formerly part of a monastery and specifically, the Monastery of Karea in Hymettus. In Monastiraki Square also dominates the old Tzistaraki Mosque which was built in 1759 and which today houses a branch of the Museum of Folk Art.
The area of ​​Monastiraki was considered for a long time part of the district of Psyrri, which reached Thiseio and the borders of Plaka. It began to exist as a separate district after the opening of Ermou Street in 1835.
