Timespinner is a good call back back to the 90’s era games that inspired it.

I'm about 80 percent done with my playthrough... and I must say it definitely it one of better metroidvania games out there! Though it starts out slow I think it really starts to hit it stride a lil past the halfway point. The orbs and the time stop mechanics are really fun and used quite well I like how you can mix and match orbs so you have one fire orb and one ice orb for an example.. the map is well designed with the main points being a castle, library and lab thou areas outside of those can be a little dull looking... I think its main. Flaw thou is its main story and character design.. its story can be all over the place and instead of showing you and keeping the story right in front of you it just throws loads and loads of documents at you and while that isn't necessarily bad a lot of games do that you still have to give the player a good story without does documents . And the characters .. there just so bland like the main character is basically a more modest and less fun Shantae and she's so forgettable I don't even remember her name she responds to events and dialogue mostly with ", whatever" like literally says that like 5 times and the game does that thing where its suppose to make us believe that these characters who maybe have talked 5 times are lifelong friends forever now. But honestly these can be overlooked the gameplay and new mechanics it has are really fun and I like how it doesnt just hand you new orbs or partners (o yeah you can get little animal like partners like in castlevania ) you have to go out and explore to find them.. some of them are pretty tricky to get to.! This game does borrow a lot from castlevania symphony of the night and dawn of sorrow with relic system and interchangeable magic abilities with a attack and passive choice. It's a fun game and I really hope it gets a sequel because just some minor changes could make this one of the best metroidvania series out there ! 7.5/10

Shame it sounds like a boring game cause DAMN those sprites look like a long lost 16-bit Square game. I just love the look

I feel like at a certain point, i just don't really care to unlock double jump in anymore metroidvanias ever.

Playing a metroidvania for the story is, in many cases, a futile effort. Very few games in that genre have good stories and are carried by their art, gameplay, and music. Timespinner is definitely a good example of that.

Yup cool game!
Just wish it was longer and used that amazing time freeze mechanic for more unique situations.
7.0 is spot on.

I like how all the ui elements are just shamelessly ripped off from sotn. Respect the hustle.

I beat the game and I must say this is exactly what i'm looking for. i've bought some side scrolling games like death's gambit etc but i didn't really like the souls style game. this one is very similar to how GBA/DS Castlevania games are and it's awesome.

Lol, this looks like a fun game, but those backgrounds look straight ripped out of Castlevania games. I mean, I _want_ to play _homages_ to those games, but they could stand to tweak it slightly.

Thanks for reviewing this game, I probably would've missed it otherwise.

Just picked up this game for cheap on PS4 and am loving it since I love symphony of the night and the 2d metroid games.

It's one thing to use games as an inspiration. But this looks and feels like CV in almost every aspect, even down to the look of the animation. I feel like those games were pretty much used as an exact template. It doesn't seem bad, but it seems to lack its own identity as a result.

I bought it but I thought it was playing it way too safe even with the time stop mechanics. It felt like a Symphony of the night clone but with SNES Squaresoft sprites. It sounds appealing in theory, but personally I would like the game to have a distinct identity of it's own, like the Messenger which even though it's clearly inspired from Ninja Gaiden and Metroid, it's still felt like it's own thing.

Beat it, and I still haven't gotten everything. Time mechanics are somewhat unimportant in the long run, but neat nevertheless. Combat reminds me of Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. I'd say it's worth your time and money, though the game is a bit shorter than its contemporaries.

It's decent, but it has way too much competition. The Messenger is way WAY better for example.
