Bill rould have been rather young when Eamonn de Valera resigned as Taoiseach [prime minister of the Republic of Ireland] in 1959. He went on to be President of Ireland for two seven year terms into his old age. He had a Spanish father, was an American citizen and was raised in his grandparents' home in Co. Limerick. He was the only one of his rank to survive the Easter Rising of 1916. He was an extremely complex figure who left a rather complicated legacy personally, political and financially in terms of his family's ownership of Irish Press newspapers. I was impressed Bill had remembered him.

Still looking for the right place to comment on the panel portion... Raised in the same era as Jon and Bill, brought up in the ATL. Mom was a teacher, dad a photo journalist with UPI and AP. He covered Montgomery while MLK was working it, the March across the Pettis Bridge to the Capitol. Riots in Birmingham, was standing in the hallway with his cameras behind George Wallace as the Governer was barring the door from integration at University of AL. Was present at so many significant events in the struggle for Civil Rights to bear witness and bring the public eye to the changing times. As a JOURNALIST. His personal "politics" were never part of the story as reported. Who, What, Where, When. Never "Why". That's the job of an editoralist, or commentator, or historian in the final analysis. Daddy was a staunch, life-long, Republican. But you would never know it from his body of work. That's the job of the 4th Estate. To be the check and balance on the checks and balances.
