Law of Conservation of Energy - energy cannot be created or destroyed just transferred from store to store.

Energy can be usefully transferred or wasted.
There is no change to the total energy of the system.
In every transfer there is some energy transferred by heating to the surroundings. This is usually a wasted form. And we call this heating of the surroundings: dissipation of energy.
