Honda GX160 DIY Rebuild teardown

This is the Tear down of the Honda GX160 this will be the same for all the Honda gx series motors. What I had originally thought was going to just be a set of rings turns out to be that the cylinder has started flaking. this will only get worse if left the way it is. The piston, crankshaft, camshaft and everything else in the Honda gx160 motor look pretty good. So where do we go from here.
use this as a guide for the honda gx160,gx120,gx200 models.

Fascinating that anyone can remember where all the disparate screws and bolts go when stored in a pile!

Is it possible to bore out the cylinder and install a cylinder sleeve in a GX Honda engine?

The marks in the cylinder look like maybe the piston was left in one spot for a while and the ring corroded at that spot, what do you think ?

I have a 5.5 honda engine from an airless sprayer can I still just buy a block and replace the piston with rings and I should be good to go ?

Jerry, I've watched a number of videos of people removing their governors similar to how you did. Why not just punch the whole thing out from the back like you did the mounting shaft? It should just pop out assembled.

Great video! Thanks. I'm tearing down a honda clone tomorrow. This helps a lot.

I'm trying to fix my gx160 and I bought it a lot that comes with carb, spark, gaskets, and new tubes I am getting good spark but it won't start I was thinking it was the oil and level being low and I checked it and it was too liquidy and I think it was full of gas and oil...what do you think happened

Great video but you edited the part where the pullstart is removed and the big nut beneath it which is the part I wanted to see.

I love messing with small engines like that and seeing how they work. Trouble is replacement parts for them are so pricey vs. just buying a new engine. Kinda typical of the throw away society. For instance a new carb for my lawnmower engine was like $20 vs $35 for parts for a rebuild kit.

Hi Jerry, I have a honda gx160 and I need to change the crankshaft from a tapered one to a "q" type one. Can I replace it without having to strip the head down or will it damage the valves if I don't?

whats the material for the original camshaft ?

The govenor can be removed easily by just bashing the pin out . Leaving the clip in place.
