That was an illuminating discussion. I recently listened to about 6 hours of lectures on the history of Dutch painting and I didn’t learn half as much as this lecture provided. I can’t believe that I have just today learned of you and your work. Many thanks!

To see a Vermeer painting,
is a must see,
colours amazingly vivid,
photos do not do it justice,
If you have a chance to see a Vermeer,
jump at the chance.

I just watched this again--and I still learned so much! Paul, you are right--this is not "Art History" but, if we don't know what they explored--we will remain ignorant of our own time. Thanks for putting out these videos & sharing what you have learned so freely.

I am retired & I am focused on drawing for now so, this tenet that we should draw like seeing things "coming out of a fog" is very interesting as I am doing "quick sketch" gesture drawings. {1-5 min poses w/modified Reilly method [fromJeff Watts]}

Now, I am going to set up a still life in a shadow box & set up a mirror on an easel so, I can explore values in long drawings (yay) & a self-portrait (>sigh<). And then I will always have something to work on.
(But, I will paint some colour charts from *Alla Prima II* (Richard Schmid) that will take keep me busy until Christmas!)

I do enjoy your slide shows--you bring so much context (ie. Who was a contemporary & who was wealthy! Hehe..) I _LOVE_ writing down all the books & quotes that you have shared.
Stay safe, America
Cheers, J 🖖

Thanks Paul
I'm getting a lot out of these and just like the way the learning to see progresses as you have shown here.
The awareness changing as more accumulating knowledge about the way things work(science evolving slowly and more understanding of colour, light and the visual).
Had an evolutionary journey through a time line.as painting has it also evolved through a time line.
The word was flat.
Then man learned it wasn't and so we progress?
I find that now I can progress with more understanding of the visual and how it's changed in my own personal evolution as a painter.

Excellent lecture! I wish I had seen this before going to the National Gallery of Art. It would have helped to contextualize what I was looking at. I went to the exhibit "Water, Wind, and Waves: Marine Paintings from the Dutch Golden Age." And right next to the exhibit was Paxton's "The House Maid". I stood there for about an hour and a half drawing it. I guess I'll have to make plans to go again. Can't wait for the next lecture.

Fabulous clarification that will enrich my painting in the direction I have wanted to go but have not been able to find teaching that names these concepts and approaches. One critique - the painters featured are all male and painters all referred to as "him" - in 2020 it is important to feature more women painters. The Clark Art Institute's recent show of women impressionist painters makes this point.

I so enjoy these lectures because they show the differences between certain ways of understanding pictorial space, and they perfectly articulate what is now seen as the painterly approach. But I suspect that the mania for edges, lost and found, and unmixed spots of color has become as mannered and drearily familiar as the most "outlined" older picture. I dearly love this kind of painting, but culturally, I don't think we need more subjective impressions of general light effects. We would be better off with a return to outlines, contours, structure, and above all, use of the imagination. We need to get our bearings again, and reclaim the great European tradition of all aspects of painting-- and not simply painting from life.

How ironic-- the old, 17th century arguments about line's truthfulness and moral strength versus color...has given way to the exact opposite idea, which is this video. "Truth" now means, "don't paint 'things;' paint light effects with blobs." I respect and understand this, but the irony is not lost on me, nor on anyone else who has been painting for a while.

How do you start a painting like you are coming out of a fog? You make it blurry? This is a great video, you have higher energy in these earlier videos.
