Bird Paradise National Park - Balıkesir

Towards the end of winter, the waters of Bird Lake begin to rise and cover the small willow grove and the reeds around it on the northwest shore. When winter turns to spring, migratory birds that spend the cold periods in southern countries choose the quiet Bird Paradise National Park as a place to nest. They lay eggs and incubate in their nests. The young ones open their eyes here, feed, grow, thrive and fly away to come again next year.

The nutrition, security and shelter opportunities provided by the lake waters, willow groves and reeds, as well as favorable climatic conditions, direct large bird migrations between the European and Asian continents to this small (64 Ha) corner of the country, causing the region to gain international fame. 2-3 million birds from 239 bird species that incubate, winter, and stop by during migration, from spoonbills to fishermen, from plovers to cormorants, from reed warblers to pelicans, from swans to geese and ducks, visit here every year. Bird Paradise National Park has a special place different from other national parks in our country. A Class A European diploma was given by the Council of Europe in 1976 due to the bird richness of the national park, which is of international importance, and its successful conservation practice within the definition of a national park. This diploma was renewed in 1981-1986-1991 and 1996. In addition, with the decision published in the Official Gazette dated 15.04.1998 and numbered 23314, the Bird Sanctuary was included in the scope of the Romsen Convention (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, Especially as Habitats for Waterfowl).

Places to See: The opportunity to watch interesting periods of bird life in the Bird Sanctuary is between March-July and September-October. A wide area can be observed from the watchtower.

Available Services and Accommodation: Extensive information is given about the birds in the park at the museum and administration center in the national park. Conducting scientific research in the national park requires the permission of the park management. There are promotional windows. The bird watchtower, which was rebuilt in 2001, is the largest among its counterparts in the world. Its height is 17.5 m. Binoculars are provided to visitors in the tower, whose platform can accommodate 40 people. There is no accommodation or food services in the park. Accommodation can be found in hostels in Sığırcıatik village, 1 kilometer away, or in hotels in Bandırma, Erdek and Gönen.
