Great Spotted Woodpecker Pecking Wood

Показать описание
The Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is a medium-sized woodpecker species found throughout Europe and parts of Asia. It is easily recognizable by its striking black and white plumage, with a bright red patch on the lower belly of the male. The female has the same plumage pattern, but lacks the red patch.
Great Spotted Woodpeckers are primarily forest birds, although they can also be found in wooded gardens and parks. They feed on insects, larvae, and spiders, which they find by drilling into trees with their strong bills. They also eat nuts, seeds, and fruit during the winter months when insects are scarce.
Breeding typically occurs from April to June, with both the male and female excavating a nest hole in a tree. The female lays 4-7 white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for around 12-13 days. The young fledge after around 20-24 days, and are then fed by their parents for several weeks.
The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a common and widespread species, and is not considered to be globally threatened. However, habitat loss and fragmentation can be a threat to local populations.
