When it comes to producing a new garment, one of the most overlooked attributes is how well it performs in the laundering process. An important concern should always be the dimensional stability of the garment (also known as SHRINKAGE!). At Indie Source, we make sure to test every product through different heat tests to see if the product will shrink or maintain its original shape. As a designer, this is so important because your customers want to buy products that they can wash confidently knowing it’s going to last a long time. Some areas to look at when trying to enhance the dimensional stability of your garment are the fiber content being used as well as any finishes added to the garment. For example, fibers like wool naturally perform very poorly in high temperatures so it’s a good idea to combine wool with other fibers to create a more structurally-sound material.

Jennifer reviews an example of a fabric cut that we performed a shrink test on. Using heat, we found that the fabric shrunk both up and expanded. So what to do with that info? We adjust the #pattern. We would make it larger where it would shrink up, and smaller where it will shrink. #themoreyouknow
