This is one of the most common questions asked by expectant parents. Should my child’s stem cells be collected in a private cord blood bank. The simple answer is no, if you don’t have a condition in your family which can be cured by bone marrow transplant. It should be collected only in very few conditions like if there is a sibling or of there is an elder chid with a condition like thalassemia, which can be cured by bone marrow transplant then the younger sibling cord stem cells could be collected. So this is a very minority of people where we advise to collect the stem cells. In general, if there is no familial bone marrow disorder problem, the cord stem cells should not be collected in private cord blood for use of the same kid in the future. The reasons are many. First of all, the cord stem cells which are collected is a small quantity, which is suitable for a child or an adult of less than 50 kilos. Secondly the chances that the stem cells are used for the same child in the future is extremely low, very very low chances almost to 1:20000 to 1:40000. It cannot be used if the same child develops any conditions like leukaemia or any bone marrow disorders because his own stem cells will not help in that condition. So it should be used, only if there is a sibling who has a bone marrow disorder which may be cured by bone marrow transplant. Only in those conditions, we advise to collect the cord stem cells. It should not be collected just as biological insurance thinking that if the child develops any of the disorders in the future, that the stem cells can be of help. As of now there is no evidence that the cord stem cells can cure any other disorders apart from bone marrow disorders.
