Sometimes the ideas for character design come right away while other times you have to develop them and try different things to see what you like. Visual ideas can spark other ideas for characters, stories, and the world which makes designing your own characters so fun!

other watercolor paint colors Miyazaki recommends

Watercolor brush -- Namura large brush (Amazon has it but little expensive)

(there's a cheaper set but longer delivery)

Lead (the brand I use is "Uni Color 0.5")
