Before Reginald R. Robinson was an internationally known American Jazz and Ragtime pianist and a MacArthur Genius, he was a student in an Urban Gateways program in the 1980s. A jazz ensemble visited his elementary school with a live performance, where he immediately developed a love for the piano and ragtime music.

Now, as an Honorary Board Member of Urban Gateways, artists like Reginald remind us every day what it means to be inspired - how just one arts experience can set a new course, and how valuable the arts are for young Chicagoans in particular. Just like many of the thousands of students impacted by Urban Gateways programs every year for the last 60 years, Reginald experienced how the arts can transform your life.
