Restoration of German Seax Knife

Показать описание
Hi! Today, the restoration of the German Seax knife. I bought this knife at a flea market. The blade is in good condition. There is rust, some chipped blades and knife points. In my opinion, this knife was created in the 20th century. The handle is missing, and there is no scabbard. But the shape matches the seax knife. And of course, I'm starting to restore the item.
First of all, I took off the handle, which, by the way, in my opinion, was from an old chisel. The blade itself was placed in a rust remover. Some time after cleaning the blade, I placed the blade in warm water with baking soda to neutralize the acid effect. Next, the blade is treated with a soft iron brush and lightly sanded with sandpaper. I used 120 to 600 grit sandpapers. I also adjusted the tip of the blade. Furthermore, I did not completely align the blade, because I would have lost a lot of metal because the notches are deep.
The handle of the knife. Traditionally, I used elk horn, black hornbeam wood and brass with leather. Initially, I wanted to use copper, but the copper turned out to be too thick and heavy. To the end of the shank of the knife, I added a pin on which I cut the thread. And after gluing, I tightened the tang of the knife with an additional nut. After the handle of the knife was dry, I processed it, shaped it into the shape I needed, and soaked the handle with hot olive oil.
I tried to make the sheath for the seax knife in a traditional style. I used natural, thick leather. Using warm water, I soaked the leather, making it supple and soft. And then, wrapping the knife with a film, I left the sheath to dry for a day, thereby giving the desired shape.
The next day, after the leather dried, I cut off the excess and started gluing. To prevent the knife blade from cutting through the seam and thread, I added a leather insert of the same thickness in the central part. I carefully glued and stitched everything.
Next is the hardware. I used only brass. I cut out all the details by hand, engraved them and added some decor. Furthermore, I installed two suspension rings. Then I cut out the leather straps and fastened them to the rings with rivets.
After the assembly, I slightly sharpened the knife and, as always, prepared an interesting and fun test for you. Be sure to like this video and don't forget to share it with your friends. Thanks.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!
