Venezuela election: Canada among countries supporting Maduro opposition

Canada was among several international countries coming out Monday in support of Venezuela’s democratic opposition after both sides claimed victory in Sunday’s election.

"I want the people of Venezuela — the democrats of Venezuela — to know that Canada stands with them and recognizes that they are fighting hard for democracy and freedom," Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

President Nicolás Maduro and opposition rival Edmundo Gonzalez both claimed victory in Venezuela's presidential election that millions in the long-suffering nation saw as their best shot to end 25 years of single-party rule.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier on Monday congratulated Maduro on his re-election, saying Moscow enjoyed a strategic partnership with the South American state and that Maduro was always welcome in Russia.

Freeland says it takes courage to stand up for democracy. Yeah, we tried that here in Canada and look what happened.

Most Canadians don’t give a hoot about Maduro and Venezuela. We have our despot here which needs to be voted out of the office.

So why does Global put up a heading claiming Canada supports Maduro in the heading when Freeman speaks of support for the Democracy movement? What kind of misinformation is that?

Canada, mind your own business. And take care of your own dilapidated backyard.

You have sanctioned them to collectively punish. Not sure what people you care about.

Our (joke) government and Freeland DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME on anything! I'm not interested in Venezuela, I'm concerned about Canada .

Canada should mind its own business and stay out of other countries' affairs. The USA covets that Venezuelan oil and Trudeau follows whatever the Americans tell him to do.

Canada needs to stay out of the elections of sovereign countries.

As always, Trudie and Freeland always wait fot their master, the Americans, to make a statement before they do 😂😂😂

Canada should mind its own business for a change and stop following the lead of its dysfunctional brother down south. Of course our brother needs "regime change" in a country who has the world largest oil reserves among other natural resources. Gotta get a piece of that pie.

If anyone is actually interested in knowing why there are confused people in the comments, the title is truncated to "Venezuela election: Canada among countries supporting Maduro" (with "opposition" omitted) in some views and apps. That's why I clicked on the video to begin with. This is a pretty bad oversight by Global News, they should understand the platform
