When I lived in Japan I met so many people who had a couple of bonsai outside their house. One of the regulars at my bar showed me his and he was so laid back about them. I was there saying stuff like "Wow! They look so old, they must have taken your forever and be very valuable" but he was so laid back and laizze faire about his trees.

"I've only had them 30 years. It's not that much effort. If they survive another 30 more I will be happy. It's just a hobby."

His trees looked beautiful. So the key to nice bonsai is probably to have a laid back attitude and not stress. And definitely not waste your time gatekeepers other people's!

Yeah, you can't just make a Bonsai Tree with years of patience and loving care. You have to buy a really old one and make a video about that, so interesting and you can learn how to use a credit card.

I do a lot of "practical" bonsai (herbs, spices, etc.), and I'm frequently told that none of my trees will ever be "real bonsai", let alone in my life time (I also use a lot of young material).

I just wanna grow my trees, and chill, lol.

I find these snobs bizarre - well actually it's quite apparent the elitist attitude is a mask for insecurity.

Bonsai just means that it is planted in a container and the only main goal is to replicate a realistic depiction of nature in miniature form whilst maintaining health for the specimen. There is no set rule for how to accomplish this as even bonsai techniques, tools and reasoning kept changing over thousands of years. So why does it matter how you choose to do it? Did you create a miniature tree that reflects the look of an aged tree/landscape? Yes? Then that's bonsai.

I live in phoenix Arizona and many bonsai species can't cope here. Fry July of '23 offed several of my plants and in my effort to preserve my 3 maples I brought them in for 6 weeks and my temukayama I don't think survived. What's working? My dwarf pomegranate and 2 bougainvillea. It's the cards I'm dealt.
