Youtube blogger Nas Daily has been accused of disrespect for Filipino culture during his visit there. I'll share my thoughts on why YouTube bloggers care only about views and how foreigners should behave being abroad (Philippines, Singapore). My honest view as a YouTube blogger and Singapore expat.

WHAT IS THIS VIDEO ABOUT:
I'll explain why youtube bloggers sometimes take advantage of other people or even counties to gain views, likes and make CRAZY money out of it. You'll know why some foreigners come to Singapore, the Philippines, or other countries and don't want to learn and respect the local culture.

What happened? Youtube blogger and a founder of Nas Daily was recently accused of heavily disrespecting Filipino culture during his visit there. His name is Nuseir Yassin, and this is the guy who took a casual walk with Singapore's Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, and who mentioned before that he loves Singapore so much.

Let me give you a short overview of what happened from a perspective of a foreigner living in Singapore. It's an important topic for me as - firstly - I'm also living not in my home country, - secondly - I'm in the social media business too, so I know how content creators think and want to share it with you.

The latest allegation against NAS comes from Louise Mabulo, farmer, social entrepreneur, and chef from the Philippines. In her Facebook post, she explained that NAS arrived at her town to cover her story on The Cacao Project and her family took him in as a welcomed guest. Mabulo also mentions that NAS had no regard for local customs or cultures. After that, NAS responded in his Facebook page addressing these allegations, and then it just went back and forth.
So I don't want to go further in it because don't have enough evidence of who is right and who is wrong. Moreover, I personally used to watch NAS Daily vlogs and get inspired by them. I even met for coffee NAS Daily business partner here in Singapore. But!

I want to discuss a more important topic in general. If someone came to my hometown and started to complain about how miserable it is, I would feel bad. There is a famous proverb: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I moved to Singapore in 2018 intending to learn more about the country and the people. To be honest, here it's easier than in some other countries, as Singapore is a melting pot of different cultures and nationalities with considerable influence from the West as well. It means that Singaporeans, in general, are more inclusive and flexible with foreigners. At the same time, it is still many things for me to know in Singapore, and I make an effort to learn them here.

So coming back to NAS Daily. Why are content creators so like that? Besides being a blogger myself, I have many friends among Instagram and YouTube bloggers. All of them have one most important KPI or metric for their success - their views. So speaking about bloggers, and their growth hacking, they know they can get more views using their knowledge of what the audience wants.

So simple story sells better than the complex one. A nominal average viewer's IQ on YouTube is equivalent to a 12-years old kid. It's a context of when the one is chilling and taking his time on YouTube after a long working day. So these primitive video stories from NAS daily are very easy-to-consume YouTube content. And when you know that, you know how the YouTube algorithm works, you can be inclined to make use of it.

Please note: I'm not defending NAS and Nuseir Yassin. I don't know what he did. If he used this kind of approach and attitude towards Filipino culture and heritage, that's disgusting. I am just trying to explain what's going on in a blogger's head, especially money-oriented head.

That's why I don’t like to create shallow fast food kind of content. I'm personally always trying to go deeper and balance between easy to understand on the one hand but not so obvious and trivial content on the other hand. But what I know for sure is that you should never discriminate against other people, and you have to respect indigenous culture whatever you go.
And remember: Life is complex. It's not black and white. And that's why it's so interesting.

Nas has issues in Malaysia and Indonesia, too. So you can really tell he's not genuine. Those fake irritating smiles are jsut for show.

I'm not filipino, but capitalizing on indigenous culture without thorough understanding and research (e.g whether it's sacred or protected by law) and one is not part of that culture, is disrespectful enough for me.

Nas problem in the Philippines started with Apo Whang-Od. He claims Apo Whang-Od wanted to teach her craft to others for the price of Php750 through Nas Academy. He claims he had her consent since he has a video of her placing her thumb mark on a contract he had prepared. The reality is Apo Whang-Od's craft is considered sacred by her tribe and is only handed down to females of her bloodline. She's a part of an indigenous tribe protected by the Philippine law. Nas's contract is void because it cannot supersede the Indigenous Act of the Philippines. The craft does not solely belong to Apo Whang-Od but to her tribe. Nas exploited the fact that the 104 year old woman is ignorant of legal proceedings.

Then here comes Louise who wanted to express that Nas's ability to manipulate people is not an isolated incident when his issue with Apo Whang-Od came to light.

Since Nas can no longer weasel himself out of the scandal with Apo Whang-Od, he used Louise as a diversionary tactic, so he can salvage his reputation.

A repeated mistake is decision and a reasonable person will no longer consider his content a reliable source of unbiased information

The real issue of Nas Daily in the Philippines was his ignorance of our Indigenous community culture.

I'm not Filipino. Still, come on. The Filipinos have a long history of exploitation since the conquistador heydays, right down to agricultural & domestic workforce exploitation to this very day. We, as outsiders need to empathise, as well as be sensitive of other nations & their people's struggles. Especially when delving into aspects of their culture.

In my opinion? Nas Daily should not have touched Filipino culture altogether as a means to generating content. He is, after all a foreigner & an influencer. He should've drawn the line. As show of respect to the Filipino culture. Especially since their indigenous people, as well as their culture & identity are protected by law against exploitation. Why walk on thin ice just for the sake of generating content?

NAS,

You claimed you traveled 2 days to see Apong Whang-Od and “discovered” her. Well, youre not the one who discovered her. She is already famous before you even go there. The fact remains that with or without her consent, you TRIED to make a profit out of pure talent and culture. That is the point. You cant do that just by merely talking to her and the family. You have to talk to a lot of people because the culture, if you have done your research, is being preserved. We have existing laws. Thats is why you are being tagged and accused of exploitation. Blame your research team next time you go visit and dont disrespect the niece.

About the Cacao Project, handle your expectation. Just because it says “plantation” doesnt mean it has to be to the grandiose extent. Farmers are there planting their seedlings in their own backyard. You probably dont notice it because of how you manage your expectation and you expect to see farmers on the spot while working.

Lastly, you cannot validate your claims with people such as Project NightFall and NAS Academy where you are in fact related to all of them. The fact remains that you have been cancelled to most of South East Asian countries because of your condescending attitude, and that is way more alarming than your validation claims and connections to those from Project NightFall and Nas Academy.

And please stop making videos to an already popular item because really theres no point to make a content out of it, and at the end you will monetize or try to make a profit out of it. Stop Catriona Gray Academy she is already famous before you came in the picture, and she already has a platform, do not jive in to her, she doesnt owe you anything. Do not try to take advantage of Philippines as social media capital because we all know youre only after the views and the money you will make out it. Lost Juan even revealed your true colors. Shame on you, why dont you pick on your own people who smug.

Other personalities who cancelled their courses are:

❌Catriona Gray, Miss Universe 2018

❌ Jessica Soho, TV Reporter

❌ Michael Cinco, renowned world fashion designer

❌ Erwan Heussaff, Content Cretorcand Founder of FEATR

❌ Mavrick Bautista, Basketball Coach

❌ Carlo Ople, Digital Marketing Guru

❌ James Deakin, Television and Events Host

❌ Moira Dela Torre, singer

❌ Jason Magbanua, photographer

❌ Chinkee Tan, finance motivational speaker

❌ Vanjo Merano, Panlasang Pinoy Food Vlogger

These people are already popular and they dont need to team up with you, because honestly, you are the only one who will gain 💰💰💰 by sharing some of their talent and hardwork in exchange of NAS platform, they dont need you to further their careers. They are already popular before you.

I have once gone to a cosplay event where a special guest Japanese cosplayer came for promoting cosplay. When the host asked her the first question how about Singapore? The first thing she said is Singapore is very boring because our nightlife is almost to none. She doesn't quite like Singapore. I lost interest in her after that. I thought it was quite rude for people to give such a comment, especially she has just arrived in Singapore for only 2 days. There is so much to discover but all she cares about is nightlife... She can say other things like Singapore is clean, safe etc, but no, it has to be only nightlife.

A businessman in a creator mask. I don't have anything against Nas but somehow I felt that he's changed even the style of his contents, unlike the earlier stage where he's doing short travel vlogs. Getting more and more haters only means that something is really wrong.
