For those who don’t know why there is a Buddha kid here, it’s because the game developer, Game Science, wanted to honor Mr. Tieniu, the actor who played Maitreya Buddha in the 1986 version of Journey to the West. He passed away 9 years ago, so in the game, the character is also 9 years old to commemorate him.

Fun Fact: In the Buddhist World View/Cosmology, the division of time is called a Kalpa, which is roughly the time between each major calamity which destroy the entire universe. There are types of kalpas and the largest unit is called a mahakalpa, which is supposed to be 1.3 trillion years. The one we are in now is called the Fortunate Kalpa, as there are supposedly 1, 000 Buddhas born during this time. We are at the beginning of this, as the Shakyamuni Buddha of our planet is the 4th Buddha of this Kalpa, and this little Buddha, Maitreya, is the 5th one, who will become Buddha in 5.6 billion years.

According to Theravada lore, Mitteya Buddha will ascend to Buddhahood after the apocalypse that will wipe out the majority of the population.
That means Mitteya Buddha will not save living things during the apocalypse since he would not have become a Buddha yet.
Celestial beings and devas will try to save a few people with good karma, but they will be powerless too.
We, Theravada buddhist believe we can only save ourselves in that apocalypse but if we have vajra (bad karma), we won't escape too.

As the name suggests, Mi Le has been widely worshipped as the saviour and/or deliver of a new world. That is also the reason that throughout the history of China, many revolutionary rebellions and cults consider Mi Le as their deity.
