I went to a private school. They just asked whether we wanted to be doctors, lawyers or engineers depending on whether we were good at science, English or maths 🤣

All the careers advice I had as a teenager was thoroughly pointless. Until you see the world of work firsthand you've no real idea what you really want.

So relatable, in my last year I feel like that's the only thing teachers would talk to you about 😂😂😂

Love how she just says 'well good luck with that' rather than giving her advice how to actually go about it. Like routes into theatre at uni, what subjects she should take at A level, what other jobs she could do if she doesn't quite get a well paid role, help joining a theatre group or public speaking classes. Tons of advice you could give.

if you asked them they're like "you need to follow what you enjoy"

As a Mia this was triggering. I had 2 careers meetings one with someone who was a very girly feminine woman and one with a man. The second one with the man was my absolute favourite. He used to be in the raf and that’s what I want to do so we basically chatted about the process of getting in then talked about planes for an hour and other people had to reschedule their meetings cause we just talked about planes

My high school careers advisor was USELESS she didn't give me any useful advice, wasted my time with a stupid anecdote about a priest and overran the meeting, making me 10 minutes late for lunch 😑

I wish that just one single person in high school had told me my local free university had one of the most world rebound Sound Engineering, Lighting Design/Operation and Theatre technology courses, that also included options for learning AV stuff including live to TV vision switching. All they did was tell me that i would never be a musician and to think about maybe going into events management or just working entry level jobs and being in a cover band for fun on weekends LMAO. I ended up finishing school early and getting into that course and graduating top of the class and running away from my small rural Australian town to manage the sound and lighting department of the great Moscow circus for a year long Australia wide tour just a few weeks after graduating. But it’s sad that I had my dreams crushed and they had no knowledge of a course that would enable me to work in the part of the music industry where you never run out of work and get to meet your heroes. They really didn’t know wtf to do with kids who hadn’t already decided what to do at Uni. They were just disappointed and confused that I didn’t want to do anything with my top 2% of high scores for the school in psychology and also couldn’t imagine a future for any of us that involved leaving our small town to study or live or work so I guess that’s why they didn’t suggest the course I ended up finding out about on my own and pursuing. They had no reason to think I wouldn’t get in because it’s requirements were vastly lower than my grades.

what careers chat? they never gave us proper guidance of what our skills could be best suited to they just imagined we already had a career plan

Student: I want to go into an industry which I love, am passionate about and could be very lucrative if I work hard and am talented and on the off chance I might even be able to earn major money. Gotta try right?

Advisor: Ooh are you sure? Are you sure you don't want to be a teacher or nurse instead? Very hard work and many years of study for not great pay with zero chance of making big money or being famous? Yeah teacher much better 🤣.

Glad my Careers Chat went better than this. I was given info on local theatre companies, extras agencies and how to go about creating a portfolio.

why do 16 year olds need career advice? do don’t have to have it all worked out at 16, just your plans for the next two years
