Find the mama bear inside you

It is hard for me to let my mama bear come out because of my own social anxiety (I have a whole account about that here @socialanxietyreality) 😬. But sometimes my drive to help my kids overpowers my fears of being perceived as “annoying” or “pushy.”

Sometimes in order for our kids to be successful we need to advocate for them. That’s what happened to me when my son’s dental fears became a front burner issue. His panic was growing every visit and getting x-rays became impossible.

He agreed to do dental exposures with X-ray tools I bought online and even let my hygienist friend come over and position them correctly! He worked on it for 6 MONTHS.

But there was one more hurtle. There was only one dental hygienist in this child practice that handled his anxiety calmly. I knew if he didn’t get her the odds of success were slim to none, even with all his work.

It was awkward for me, but I went to the desk and quietly explained the situation. They marked in his charts that he must always be scheduled with her.

When the time came to get the X-rays all his work (and my advocating) paid off! The hygienist was patient and calm and he was able to get through all the dental work.
