Hi! I'm The Stitchess! I'm an interdisciplinary artist and seamstress. I started sewing when I was 8 and loved it so much I made it the focus of my study in college. After a lifetime of battling severe mental health issues - I found healing in the radical softness and Japanese kawaii communities. As much as I love fashion and clothing, I also think it's important to consider how and where clothing is made. I went fast fashion free at the start of 2019 to voice my concerns over the rapid consumerism gripping the garment industry. By no means am I perfect, but I think it's important to show that change is a process. I believe it is always important to strive to be better, even if perfection is unattainable. Thank you so much for letting me share my art and process with you. I hope we can all grow together!

Actually, a good thing within this year and pandemic, is that a *lot* of people, old and young, are getting back on sewing - they mostly start with a simple mask and then they want to make more. I don't know when we lost interest in sewing, teens magazines in the 60s were very sewing-focused.

As someone who works at a dry cleaners I really appreciated this video. People would save a LOT of money if they did just a little research into symbols, and the nature of stains. Trade secret: dry cleaners WASH most of the clothing that comes through our doors, because the label specifies NO dry cleaning solution. Also remember, if it's an oil or grease stain: dry clean; but for dirt, water based stains or ANY kind of odor removal: it has to be washed. Loved this vid! I'm really learning a lot from your channel :)

I'm in one of those weird situations where I know a bit about sewing, but there's a huge gap between "able to hem a pair of long pants" to "make the outfits I would actually want to wear". Honestly I might have to snag a few of these!

I always buy vintage sewing books from charity shops. It's worth it just for the beautiful illustrations. My favourite is called The Encyclopedia of Advanced Dressmaking from 1978 and not only has very fun suggestions for sleeve silhouettes and shaped pockets, but even has patterns in the second half of the book (you have to copy them out to full size). Another one in my collection is Modern Needle Craft by Davide Minter- it's not dated but the illustrations look like they're from the 30s. There's a section on millinery! This book has patterns throughout, and at the back has several pages of suggestions for teaching needlecraft to different ages, starting at kindergarten level!

I remember seeing this in the library when I was in high school. I guess people don't really repair their clothes anymore because of trends. For the most part, trendy clothes aren't made to be repaired.
And even in the 90s Home Ec was kind of a joke. The only sewing project we had was to make a really simple pillow. And for cooking, we used the microwave to make rice krispie treats. 🙄

THE AMOUNT OF TIMES
I remind people that if they really love something DONT put it in the dryer lol

I've got Readers Digest Complete Guide to Sewing from 1976. And whoever owned it before me left really cute Christmas envelope stamps and stuff inside, so so sweet.
Also, I want to get that singer Lingerie book hahah

Once you find a well written resource series, you're hooked. Printed a pdf chapter from a sewing companion library series book, now have ordered the entire series off thrift books for $32. It's a book series detailing each garment's construction and detail options. Stoked

Please also check your local libraries. You may be able to borrow these books to flip through them before you spend some hard earned money.

Okay, so I'm an archivist, and seeing you handle the books in those gloves makes me want to get some with lace and frills for work! Maybe I could sew some onto a pair....

oh my goodness, these are INCREDIBLE! do you have the reader's digest complete guide to needlework (from 1979, i think)? it was passed down from my grandma to my mom to me, and i love it SO MUCH! it doesn't have much on sewing, but it has these beautiful visual guides to knitting and crochet and embroidery and other needlework... for visually-oriented learners like myself without the attention span for video tutorials, it's basically the holy grail

I NEED need the "Sewing Care and Repair" book. One of my few is as a bathroom attendant at a club. I carry my sewing kit and a small spray bottle of shout with me and have used both more times than I care to count. If you have ever sewn up or cleaned a distressed, shortcut, drunk person's clothes in a bar restroom with them in it, of course, you know that shortcuts are happily welcomed. I need this in my life. Please, point to a cheap version.

Learning to darn saved my favorite sweater! I had a huge hole right in the middle of the stomach area and i was devastated because im plus sized and its hard to find good sweaters and she wasnt cheap. I felt so powerful getting a near seamless repair instead of tossing and buying new. Eff u fast fashion, im a PRARIE MOM!

OMG I didn't know Singer had sewing books! now I have to find them! I have a singer sewing machine and I love it! So, Singer is definitely a great brand in my book. Not only that but I found out that when my grandma was sewing she used a Singer machine too. Makes me wish I got into sewing a lot earlier when she was alive so I can share what I made with her and she give me advice to help me be better. also I LOVE your gloves!

omg! I have a sort of omnibus of sewing techniques from Singer, from I think 1982? So it is dated, fashion-wise, but it contains a lot of the tailoring info, adjustments, pattern drafting, fabric usage (like when to place on the bias!) repair techniques, etc. There's even a section on sewing home goods, which is really fascinating! (lots of foam and modular things, which aren't as easy to find materials for anymore lol.) That book's been a godsend for cosplay and just general sewing knowledge. I really want to seek out some of these more focused books now though - the 1994 formalwear one with its Victorian-inspired stuff is just amaaazing!

My mom grew up making her own clothes, and made our Halloween costumes, some clothes, and a sweet flower girl dress for me that is totally from that early 90s era haha. So it's really cool seeing someone else who is passionate about this stuff and also grew up immersed in sewing traditions!!

These also remind me a lot of the Sunset magazine books that I obsessively collect, which detail lots of home improvement projects - from making a patio to designing a bathroom to building a sauna(?!) Even though the internet contains infinite knowledge, having the info all in one place in your hands can make all the difference when you're working on a specific project or learning new techniques.
