I've never heard about this, but imo maybe it depends on who's the cashier? I've bought clothes in uniqlo quite frequently and the cashier will give you the item with either two hands or one. I never saw the same person twice so...

Some stores in Japan don’t necessarily handover the goods to customers at the tills with two hands. It’s a matter of management and training that lead to the varied quality of service between retailers.

Not that in Asian countries, I found most of their sales staffs are very eager to do their jobs. Even when walking by they would say Hello and ask if you are looking for sth that they could help.
