Asparaginase (Elspar) - Mechanism of Action

This video describes the mechanism of action of Elspar which is asparaginase. Asparaginase enzyme converts deamination of amino acid asparagine into aspartate thereby decreasing the availability of asparagine in the blood. Some tumor cells like acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells lack asparagine synthetase enzyme and are entirely dependent on blood asparagine for protein synthesis. Assparaginase works by decreasing the concentration of asparagine thereby makes these cells deficient in asparagine thereby affecting their protein synthesis.
