I have an S&S 124 HC Twin Cam crate motor in my 2015 Street Glide with 47, 000 miles on it. I've been all over the US on multiple trips in 30 to 108 degree weather and have had minimal issues with this engine. I can cruise between 80 and 125 MPH all day in the western states and this engine loves it, yet it has good manners in stop and go traffic. Maintenance is the key to reliability and longevity with these engines. I do my own work and make sure things are right between trips. I took the heads off at 20, 000 miles to look it over. Although things didn't look bad, I honed the cylinders, put new piston rings on and replaced the valve springs and seals while it was apart. I also replaced the lifters at the same time. I viewed that as cheap insurance. Like this guy said, a clutch upgrade, air cleaner, exhaust, ignition, throttle body, and a bigger oil tank were all necessities. I also change the oil every 2500 miles and use 20-50 synthetic.

I have shut it down a few times in stop and go traffic on 95 degree days when the factory head temperature sensor hit 330 degrees to prevent possible damage to the engine, but I do not have an extra oil cooler or head fans like this guy does. I chose not to spend the money for those things and just watch the temperature in tough conditions. I have not converted to chain drive and I'm running my original belt, but I don't do burnouts, 2nd gear wheelies and stuff like that.

I'm running a 2 into 1 exhaust made by Khromeworks and I have to tell you, it sounds pretty good going over the Rocky Mountains at the higher RPM's. My engine dynoed 148 horsepower and 142 lbs. of torque. I had some head work done by MegaFlo to raise the horsepower a bit.

No regrets, I would recommend this engine to anyone who wants to enjoy serious power and is mindful of regular maintenance.

I have a 2001 FXDX with a 124 R+R on it. Rear wheeled at 140tq @ 4k rpm, and 140hp @ 6400 rpm. All forged, and welded pin. 640 lift cams. Thing rocks!

Who would want a new bike when you have a bike like that? My Evo, TC, and M8 are all high compression, big cam, high rpm bikes. They all run from Ohio to Daytona and back every year with no incident.Only reason for bikes built like that is a few of us just plain enjoy mastering big power, then using it.Very nice build.👏👏👏

Got 20, 000 miles on my S&S 124" in my 08' Electra Glide with S&S 635HO cams and their 91cc heads CNC ported by Rick Ward. Dyno 135hp/146tq! Torque peaking @4000 rpms which is right where I want it! Great bagger setup! Now I didn't cut any corners. I have a S&S TC3 cam plate and oil pump set at 40 psi, Screamin Eagle compensator, Barnett billet clutch basket, Barnett Scorpion clutch with a lockup pressure plate, HPI 62mm TB, 6.7 g/s injectors, Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather air cleaner and a D&D Boarzilla exhaust. Oh and I run 2 oil coolers and the oil temp never exceeds 210°f. I did it right! It was a setup I saved up for 8 years and I finally captured my dream! It gets 40 mpg and I absolutely love it! Now I will be replacing lifters every 20k miles but that's part of the whole thing.

I’ve got the 124LC motor in my 09 Street Glide with a D&D 2-1. This motor is a BEAST! Been running it for 3 years. No issues.

I've got a 1979 FXWG with Santee frame and a 100 CID EVO Revtec, 6 speed gearbox, hydraulic opreated dry BDL clutch, Delcron transmission cases, primary belt, chain to the rear wheel, 100hp on the rear wheel. 148Nm torque. Tuned for reliability. Quite fast. Engine has been there for at least 20 years. Love this video.

I throughly enjoy your videos, very well put together. I too run a S&S 124, and cut a few $$ with having a bike builder custom build one for my needs. I'm still cranking out 140/140 on an "08 Road King and it's my Sturgis travel bike, strong as hell. You can't go wrong when wanting more power than with some major cubes. As for some of the associating upgrades, the compensator is a must as is the clutch and I found the front motor mount needed upgrades. I have put nearly 20K miles on the factory belt and tranny with this engine, no problems.
Love your bikes, videos and enthusiasm, keep it up.

My every day ride 1992 ST with an old S&S 124 Evo runs like a clock. Long distance runs are effortless. New Zealand

Im replacing my 110 with the high compression 640 T124. I already have scorpion clutch, baker compensator, 58mm hpi throttle body and d&d Boarzilla. All this in my 2014 cvo road king. Like you i take at least one several thousand mile trip a year. To battle the heat in Texas im running a Jagg fan assisted oil cooler. Hope for some big numbers 🙏

My 93 FXRS ultimate 113 loves high speed hwy miles. And contrary to popular belief it’s made in USA as our the jugs, pistons and assembly..great review..

I have 26, 000 miles on my dyna low rider s, I have been thinking really hard lately what direction to go with a motor or rebuild and I think this engine is the way to go, Thanks for the video! There isnt enough content on twin cams these days!

Life’s short. Play hard. Excellent big picture info.

I think you're right. Big motor for the long rides. Doing local riding just holds the bike back from doing what it wants to do! The Dyna and more realistically the FXR are built for local riding. Just curious as to the MPG on the 124.

Such a beautiful ride man, my 2011 dyna has the 110 tire shredder making 106hp and 122tq and is plenty of power for me though I do entertain the idea of a 124. I'm a fair weather rider so it would probably be a waste of money for me plus I also have a 2020 z900 for when I do feel like hauling ass lol!!!

My 2023 Road Glide Lord willing will be my forever bike. Put 34k miles on her since I got her with 5 miles on the clock back in late July 2023.. that’s kinda depressing bc those miles racking up so fast and stuff don’t last forever..
Surprisingly the S&S off the shelf top end had about 20k on and she’s holding up .. 7k miles ago she came apart to do the bottom end and cyls still in spec and sleeves look great .. but I’m gonna keep racking em up bc not riding her is like not bangin the old lady to keep her tight for the next guy if anything ever happens and we break up (unlikely .. it’s just a funny reference for guys not wanting to put miles on their bikes)
Currently has a crank up 124.. stock heads still (SS124 11:1, SS crank, much thjngs beefed up for reliability since i ride 15-25k a year … gonna leave heads alone til i can have Bone Breaker Performance (formerly Dragos) do a full motor for me ..

I recently bought a 2003 FLH. Cheap. 50 k on it. The 88" is just to slow for me. I, like you live in the Northeast, NJ. Do the same kind of riding. Fast is my speed. I was looking at this engine and enjoyed your review of it.
