I think it was in a book one of you recommended, Gaston Dorren 's "Lingo: Around Europe in Sixty Languages
", that there was a bit about a 'culture war' issue in Slovenia between (I think it was) nativists or pan-Slavists who wanted to expel the definite article from Slovenian as a foreign excrescence adopted by 'intellectuals corrupted by the West'. I seem to recall that they got nowhere with this, the 'the' being too popular.
