As a mountain, I hate both hikers and bikers.

Whoever marked the trail as mixed hiking/biking is fully insane.

Edit: I’m just presuming it was marked thusly given the conversation shown indicating that that’s the case. If it’s marked anything other than “biking trail only” then the folks who put it together have failed their job.

Edit 2: a local popped in to the comment thread below, apparently it is indeed a biking only track but people (presumably bitter hikers) keep stealing the signs marking it as such.

If I see tire marks and bike jumps on a trail I'm probably not going to hike on it.

I'm going to be as objective as possible here.

From what I've gathered, this is an unsanctioned trail in the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. Specifically, it is called "Silver Surfer" and is built off the side of the Canyon Acres trail. Map

Legally, As it is unsanctioned, neither group should be on the trail and both could be fined by a park ranger. However, all legal/sanctioned here are multiuse, I cannot fault the hikers for assuming an unmarked trail to be multiuse as well.

Where the hikers logic fails is the "we've hiked it many times before." This could be compared to walking onto a highway as a pedestrian. Yes, you should have the right of way but you can't reasonably expect the larger, faster object to be able to see you and stop in time.
Common sense would say to avoid doing these as " The graveyard is full of people who had the right of way."

Continually, The rider will not be expecting hikers or other users to attempt to go up the trail, as it is very steep, loose and tight. This assumption by the rider would lead him to believe that the only other users of this trail, will be downhill bikers. Downhill bikers would have created a large dust cloud behind them so he would have seen this dust and been prepared to stop in case the other rider crashed on the trail.

Please correct me, as I live about as far away from SoCal as possible, and have very limited knowledge around laws and regulations.

*"We will, sorry about that"* was the most calmest talk ive ever heard when getting close contact to the biker. respect.

I’ve been run over by a mountain biker. Had a really bad concussion and had to go to the hospital. It was on the downhill and my friend said I tumbled 10 xs and said the f word about 20. I don’t remember any of it. The guy was a douche as he yelled “mountain bikers, MOVE”. I pushed my friend off the trail and jumped to the side. He slammed into me. I’m a mountain biker also by the way. Anyway, he tried to blame it on me and lied about what happened. So I sued him. ….. and won.

If it's marked as both hiking and biking then the biker needs to be in control at all times. If he doesn't know what's behind the corner then it's on him to slow down in the event there are hikers. Saying it's a blind corner doesn't absolve him from the responsibility of controlling his speed.

I ride moto on mixed use trails. It’s the rider’s responsibility to ensure you can avoid others. It’s not a closed course.

It should be illegal to call a path a mixed trail when you can only fit people in a single file line with no yeild points

as a biker, you can't build jumps like this, that require large amounts of speed, and expect bikers to be able to stop. it is obviously extremely downhill, and doesn't even look like a fun trail to hike.

everyone talking about mixed trails like... it specifically has bumps to jump off, curved sides and a deep indent at a heavy slope to make it suitable as a biking trail, if it were mixed then why would there be purposeful dirt ramps to get airtime from ?
