We've all seen those artists like Karl Kopinski, Kim Jung Gi, Eliza Ivanova and Peter Han draw incredible things with little to no reference. They have vast visual memories to pull from and you can too!

Give these exercises a try and check out the full video for a couple more!

Kim jung gi always said that he would look at engines from multiple angles and try to observe it like it's the last time he'll ever be able to and later be able to draw it with pinpoint accuracy

This was genius approach
I remember, when I was a kid, I went to an art school, for extra curriculars...

My teacher made us practise using such an approach (only the first technique though, not the second one)...

Basically whatever we drew that day, when we get home we'd have to draw it from memory, for homework...Now I know why he made us do that

This is Why I LOVE OLD MANGA, they have such high details! I wonder how much time the artist spent on those super drawing

Instinctively I've started to practice drawing from memory, though it was more of me feeling drawing fatigue from trying to constantly look for references to draw so I threw caution to the wind. Drawing from a different angle though that I didn't even consider. Definitely gonna try that out 👏

I'm an artist with aphantasia so when I tried to play this game I messed up so much so this was really painful but in a fun way😂

Here's something I learned that helps me:

Counting

a) Count the number of points of high contrast between areas of high contrast, making a point to reference ratios.
b) Count the number of intersections between implied lines along a surface on a plane, noting ratios.
c Recognize how distances compare when referenced against a common line, real or imaginary, including the picture plane.

I mention these because they are highly analytical and often absent in these conversations. Consider them. There is tremendous value in accessing the portion of the mind dealing with immediacy and impressions, but to counterbalance the portion that deals with rigid analysis by only focusing on the organic is to make the same mistake in the opposite direction.

This is a highly binary way of looking at things, but so is the use of verbal language. Use what is useful. Go where you are not comfortable.

Be the first one on the dancefloor and dance alone in ecstasy. The music starts when the realization hits that music is playing.

i think knowing how that thing is composed/composition and how it works helps too. it gives you the overall structure in your head so youre basically just copying a 3d image in your head that you can draw in any angle possible

When I was younger I had dreams of becoming a comic book artist. I fell out of practice, but the idea of being a comic book artist and a having to draw, or be able to draw Everything, is extremely overwhelming!

Handle...This.

I did the 2nd one, quite a lot of times actually, I still can't draw from memory lol, maybe cause I just didn't thought of it like an exercise?

Most of the artists know this and yet only a handful of them can actually pull this off. Drawing simple objects from different angles from memory is one thing. Drawing a page full of characters with rich story, angles and poses is a whole different ball game which goes beyond just craftsmanship. Of course, practicing these will help in some way, but 99 percent of them will never have that amount of time or grind to go beyond the 3rd step. Extremely tough and next level dedication is needed. Otherwise, proko will also be doing that rather than tutoring in YouTube. No offence.
