Formula 1 analytical ranking: Ferrari and the growth trend team must maintain in 2025 F1 season

Assessing Formula 1 performance is a deeply intricate challenge. In 2024, Ferrari fell short once again, while McLaren and Max Verstappen claimed victory. Over recent weeks, we have analyzed the drivers' performances across the just-concluded season. Evaluating teams demands a similar approach, factoring in multiple elements. By focusing on "measurable" criteria, the assessment becomes less influenced by subjective impressions, regardless of how grounded they may be. For this reason, we based our evaluations on five core rationales, recognizing that other significant factors might exist but were excluded due to a lack of clear evidence. As shown in the summary, the final assessments, determined by scoring each criterion, align closely with the constructors' championship standings.

The opening analysis considered the baseline specifications of each car at the start of the campaign. Red Bull indisputably launched into the season with a car as dominant as it had been at the end of 2023. This dominance was exemplified by Sergio Perez’s performance, securing second place in three of the first four races. Ferrari emerged as the strongest challenger to Red Bull, bolstered by Carlos Sainz’s triumph in Australia and consistent showings throughout the early rounds.

Before the Chinese Grand Prix, the McLaren MCL38 seemed incapable of mounting a serious challenge to Red Bull, though its foundational design appeared solid. Mercedes lagged slightly behind its main competitors, leading the midfield yet unable to pressure the frontrunners. From pre-season testing in Bahrain, it was evident that the Aston Martin AMR24 lacked the spark of its predecessor, making it unlikely for Fernando Alonso to replicate his 2023 podium successes. Meanwhile, Alpine, Sauber, and Williams struggled in the shadows of the field, showing little promise.

When it comes to development over the season, McLaren was the clear standout, deserving the unofficial title of "most improved team." Starting from Imola, the papaya-colored car consistently became one of the most competitive machines on the grid, thanks to a well-executed development strategy that unlocked its latent potential. In stark contrast, Red Bull experienced a plateau with the RB20, which appeared to reach the natural limits of its aerodynamic design paradigm refined since 2022. The team struggled to keep pace with rivals as the season progressed.

A standout moment in Qatar offered a glimmer of hope for Red Bull engineers, providing a foundation for their 2025 efforts. For Ferrari, the SF-24’s development trajectory remains a bittersweet chapter. While the car’s technical foundation under Project 676 was sound, its evolution faced a major setback with a failed upgrade introduced during the Spanish Grand Prix. This misstep, occurring at the start of a grueling triple-header, disrupted the team's progress and left a significant opportunity unrealized.
