Zooming in on Atoms!

One of the quests in physics is to understand why materials behave the way they do. What's better than the ability to see the atoms themselves?  But how to look at them? A Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), based on the principle of quantum mechanics, is a wonderful tool that offers unparalleled resolution.
In this session, we will explain how using lasers one can grow thin films of superconductors, where electrons join hands and walk together with zero resistance and study of superconductivity at ultracold temperatures using a STM.
