Today we have a demo from oxhorn lime works ltd on Facebook. We are mixing a lime based mortar to try and recreate black ash mortar which they used in the Victorian era. The wall wall built in 1892.

Excellent. I’m glad to see a popular channel such as yours showing hot mixing. So much old brickwork would be in a far better state had it been repointed in quicklime instead of cement.

Dear Stu, dear KC, I appreciate your courage handling pure CaO (bunt lime in German). The risk of accidents when exstinguishing larger quantities with water to get hydrated lime Ca(OH)2 is huge ... a clean case for protection equipment! From my point of experimente you can improve the lime mortar quality if you set a large tub with the lime and let it rest for some days upfront. Any remaining CaO in the mortar will cause a risk with durability in the joints.

Someone once told me the fact that the old houses here in Portsmouth were built with lime mortar stopped a lot of them collapsing from vibrations from indirect bomb hits in ww2, due to the better flexibility over cement.
