Montessori Phonics | Learn 2 Letter Digraphs - AI, AR, AU

Teach Montessori phonics with two letter phonograms / two letter diagraphs AI, AR and AU with this Montessori Phonics learning activity for kids which uses the time tested Montessori 3 Period Lesson.

The Montessori 3 period lesson is implemented as follows:

1. Identify the sounds of isolated phonograms – “this is”
In the first stage we will make the phonogram sounds when we trace and write them, and we will also reinforce learning with words that include a given phonogram. When we have identified the phonograms we will see if we can associate/recognize the sounds in step 2.

2. Associate/Recognize – “show me”
In step 2 show a specified phonogram upon request.

3. Recall – “what is this”
In step 3 we say the sound of the phonogram indicated upon request.

Montessori Sandpaper Letters are used to introduce the phonograms in preparation for reading. Tracing the letters with the fingertips whilst making the sound provides a tactile sensation to form both a visual and sensory impression to reinforce learning. This also develops a muscular memory that will help your child’s hand and mind become familiar with movements required to form each letter and be useful when s/he starts to write.

Montessori Sandpaper Letters can be purchased online or you can make them yourself as follows:

• Print template letters on to paper and cut them out
• Reverse the letters and place or stick them on to the back of fine sandpaper
• Trace around the letters on the sandpaper with a pen and cut them out
• Mount the numbers on separate cards (blue for vowels and red/pink for consonents) which is about 5 x 4 inches or 12 x 10 centimetres in size
