This Is America (Childish Gambino) - Animation Study

This is an animation study of Childish Gambino's This is America music video. I found the way he dances and moves very interesting and I wanted to do an exercise kind of like life drawing but with animation. I would find the key poses in the video and then do a life drawing of the pose. At the end I went in and started adding all the breakdowns and inbetweens. This helps me draw more and learn more about the way things move.

I can appreciate the work that goes into this. I do animations for a video game project and even being only roughly 3 seconds long it still takes me quite a bit of time to get them just right!

awesome study! It really works to me because it doesn't just look like you rotoscoped it, but instead, you actually understood the weight, gesture, and motion of his movement. Nice job! One criticism I have to say is that the mouth isn't very readable. Maybe if it was more exaggerated, or maybe if the lines were more cleaner. Keep it up!

Can I ask if how you use reference? I mean do you slow it down? or pause every single movement? or do you look for keyframes? then you just freestyle the inbetween's based on the movements? or do you stay true and copy every single in- between's? Can you enlighten me up on this sir, I'm an aspiring animator too and your response will be so helpful to me🙏
