Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge talk to Chris Van Vliet from WSVN-TV about playing Lando Calrissian and L3-37 in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. Donald also about Childish Gambino's new music video for "This is America". He says it is not his place to explain what is happening in the video.

I love that he isn't putting the video into any kind of context and then smoothly brings it back to promoting Solo which is the point of the whole interview anyway. Super classy.

He can't explain the video because it's designed to be a conversation piece. It's designed for people to interpret it, and open a dialogue with other people about their own personal interpretations. Explaining it would rob people of what they get from it on a personal level.

Dudes the reason he doesn't want to give his explanation on the meaning of it is because if he does, everyone else will just take his interpretation of it and make it their own and no ones views will have different interpretations of it like they do now, everyone would just say "oh this is what it actually means because that's what Donald said"

The purpose of art is people thinking for themselves. So when an artist explains what the art is about, it means the viewer is no longer thinking for themselves. It’s up for interpretation and it’s designed to be thought provoking. This Is America doesn’t force opinions down your throat. It’s real art that’s mainstream. It’s created a huge conversation and that’s its only true purpose. Phenomenal song and video... on a less serious note - who else kept shitting themselves every time the Millennium Falcon came swooping through in the background?
