Slight inaccuracy: the Buran didn't copy the Space Shuttles paint scheme. In fact, that's not paint at all: they are thermal tiles. The color of the thermal tiles corresponds to its chemical makeup, which in turn corresponds to its max heat resistance. Grey is the strongest, but also the heaviest, so it was used on the nose and leading edges of the wings. Black was the next strongest and was used on the belly and tail. White was the weakest, and used on the sides, part of the nose, and pods. The back of the shuttle, such as the payload bay doors, were covered in thermal blankets. The Buran used a similar system, hence the similar "color scheme".

Actually Soviet space shuttle impemented better ideas and engineering:
1. The main lift vehicle was the Energia rocket - as a result Buran didn't have to bring into space dead weight of powerful rocket engines like US shuttles did.
2. Buran was equipped with air breathing jet engines that would enable it to fly in the atmosphre - US shuttles were clumsy gliders once they came back from space with no margin for error.
3. Buran was equipped with automatic pilot system.
4. The STS reusable concept didn't cut cost much - indeed there were lot of maintenance and refurbishing costs required to prepare Shuttles for next missions.

Did the Buran's unique features make it safer than the US Shuttle?

Where are the sources stating that the buran copied the challenger even in terms of paint scheme?Or was it just a couple of guys at simplehistory who looked at photos and thought it looked like so and assumed thats the case?

They aren't all in poor condition. There's one in the technical museum in Speyer, Germany and its in pretty good condition (it has it's own room in the space section of the museum).
