Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this Grade 5 ABRSM Discovering Music Theory lesson I will continue to guide you through the fourth chapter of ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 5 which looks at the enharmonic scales of F#/Gb major and D#/Eb major. This chapter also covers all keys and scales up to six sharps and six flats, including major, harmonic and melodic minor scales.

I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 1 ABRSM Discovering Music Theory workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.

Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.

I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

I don't know how to read ___ melodic minor/major. Is it about the circle of fifths ?

Now that I realise it, F# major is actually the enharmonic equivalent of Gb minor, so they basically sound the same.
