Building a NATO multinational battlegroup in Bulgaria 🇧🇬

The Bulgarian and US Armies are hard at work setting up a new NATO multinational battlegroup.

After Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Allies agreed to strengthen the existing NATO battlegroups in the Baltic states and in Poland, and to establish four new multinational battlegroups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia to reinforce Allied deterrence and defence. In Bulgaria, a team of advisors from the US Army’s 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) is helping set up the new multinational battlegroup. Drawing on years of experience, they’re working alongside the Bulgarian 42nd Mechanised Battalion and a company of infantry from the US Army’s 3rd Armoured Brigade Combat Team to establish the group’s standard operating procedures. During the annual Bulgarian-led Exercise Platinum Lion 22, the soldiers had the chance to test their ability to work together by executing a battalion-sized joint operation. Infantry from the British Army’s Royal Irish Regiment also participated.

According to the SFAB soldiers, relationships and trust play a key role in building a battlegroup, especially at a time when European security has been transformed by a war on the continent.

In October, the Italian Army will assume command of the NATO battlegroup as the framework nation. Albania and the United States will contribute forces, with more nations expected to join.

W2 Skorpion camo does look great in any environment. Bulgarian M2018 camo also looks equally great, like a ditigized Flecktarn but smaller pattern.

From my layman's perspective, NATO is helping Bulgaria return back to our original (as far as I can understand it, please fellow audience members - correct me if this interpretation is wrong) way our armed forces were envisioned during 1878-1943, with an NCO core ("unteroffizier" or "подофицери"). Maybe it is not a 1:1 equivalent, but it feels like the organizational choice you make, when you are not scared about empowering your own people to become confident leaders, without only isolating them in their own "nobility cast", used to rule over "masses" - as maybe some countries see as the much safer bet for their detached tyrannical political regimes to do.
To me, we lost this advantage after USSR occupation in 1944, and amidst all the horror, tragedy, and other more tangible things we lost, at least in my experience, this is one we do not consider that often.
But, from what I can put together, this seems like a very good way to ensure your troops are very well lead and inspired, that your officers can plan about what will happen to your troops 1 year from now, instead of what they will eat tomorrow, and that your society has a group of people who are confident, because they know how few things they cannot do, who are professionals, who know how to get people to achieve something not by telling them to do it, but by showing them how cool they look when they do it flawlessly, and bringing their neighbors together behind a common goal, even outside of their military service.
I am thankful that we have, despite past present and future political difficulties (someone keeps tearing us apart), managed to come together to make that choice, and I am certain that if we do not ensure our NCOs, and in general service members, feel very well loved and respected in Bulgaria, others would gladly have them, and for good reason. I realize its probably not an easy or short road ahead of us, but I choose to see it also as a road back to home.
Thank you NATO for the opportunities that you provide to Bulgarians young and old to learn, demonstrate their skills, be treated as equals, and continuously grow over time, beyond our home-grown capabilities. Thank you for your service for all service members, working for our shared security interest. I see you looking cool here on YouTube.

Although I thought that Bulgaria 🇧🇬 stood with Russia 🇷🇺 for the longest time amid any war and Bulgaria 🇧🇬 hated the 🇺🇸 United States of America .
