Today, I tackle the A2 1.6 FSi 'Death Pipe' - Can it be done?

Not an easy fix on account of there being not much room to carry out the work. However, with a bit of perseverance, I did it - Woo-hoo!

Just embarked on this "pig-of-a-job" today, but here on the continent there is the master cylinder in the way as well... making the removal quite tricky (had to undo some brake component fasteners to get a few extra mm of wiggle room) - I don't want to think of reassembly just yet (plus I'd like to source an original pipe as well, which is not so easy when one is new to this manufacturer supply chain).

I feel with you having done this myself, this is areal pain in the back. BTW, I am the maintainer of our two A2s, a blue 1.4 TDI and a silver 1.6 FSI, apart from two MX5s and four others cars.

There are better pliers available for those pesky hose clips. The jaws are on cables, so you can reach the most awkward locations. Very useful if you are working on vehicles a lot and not expensive.

Good video. I'm tempted to buy an A2 and have been surprised how so many are neglected and sadly abandoned. This video and a few others just show that maintenance is not of any importance to some manufacturers (in other words, just shoddy design).

My gut feeling is that you should drop the engine out completely and do a full rebuild (thermostat, death pipe, injectors, seals, cables, clutch etc) every 100, 000 km.

Hi, can you tell me roughly how long it took to do the death pipe. My fsi is currently in a garage waiting to have the pipe done. Im wondering how many hours labour it will be. I caught it just in time where it started to lose water but only when it got up to temperature and the pipe started letting more water out. Managed to get home and then top it up and get it to the garage. Thanks for the great videos by the way.

Can you find someone to fabricate it from stainless steel or copper...
