The PHILOSOPHY of DOCUMENTING - My thoughts on 'Document, Don't Create'

The Philosophy of Documenting is really a spin on Gary V's "Document, Don't Create" Strategy for creators and entrepreneurs. I LOVE and really take to hear this strategy, its something I've pondered on quite a bit. I love what Gary had to say but I really TRULY feel this strategy can be turned into a philosophy about life, and I think it goes much deeper than what Gary said as well. this video scratches the surface in a different kind of way. A new take if you will...

What he means is document what you're doing, if you're a creator, document your creative process. And release your creation.

You made my day, thank you, thank you thank you ❤️ it’s so sad when you force to create something, I was starting to feel bad about it, but today thank god I saw your video. Everything has changed 🙏🏾

Love this content man! learned so much about documenting our journey. It's to show people the process of our becoming.. It's filling the gaps in what we have gone through in our lives when people know about us, whether it's our good experience or bad experience. Thank you for this.

Plus the background music is awesome. 🙂

I agree. I've been doing this as a new real estate agent and it's been very helpful to get comfortable in front of the camera. Even if the content at the beginning isn't the best. I see it as taking progress pictures at the gym. They help you measure progress and it may serve as inspiration for someone else.

To me there's a big difference between documenting, creating, and "curating". I feel like I am a curator, and I can do a healthy mix of both, using the inspiration that is flowing towards what it is I want to create. Great video!!

Inspirational documentation creates the feeling of "creating" without the need for perfection !!!! 💰💛

Such a timely video!! I went through this process in making my video for this week. I began by documenting the process of a lady who helps homeless people in my local area, and at some point along the way, that inspiration hit me and and it became such a joy to put everything together and really make it something to be proud of. I think it also helped that it wasn't something for ME, but I was doing it to show the power of helping others.

TLDR; I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I've had a few challenges in the practice of this philosophy. If you are a solo operation, authentically documenting what you are making & doing, means a LOT of footage where nothing happens and often, pretty shitty looking stuff, absent useful detail and context. There are a few options to resolve this. One option is to retake, reshoot and setup as many scenes as is necessary to achieve clarity, context and something that doesn't look like complete trash. The downside of that is that all of the authenticity goes out the window and you are mostly back to creating and not documenting. The other option is to have someone else shoot and manage all of the video stuff (as Gary does it), but this requires the resource of a friend willing to do it, or the funds to hire. I understand that there are outliers like Emma Chamberlain with raw, self produced content about nothing that catches and takes off. But I'm pretty certain that stuff is anomalous and it's personality + the right timing and not a repeatable formula or practice. at least not if it's actually about something. In theory and practice, there is a bunch that is useful to consider about the "document don't create" philosophy, like to get out of your head and into action, to stomp out perfectionism, to start AND finish a project even if it's "rough". But as you kind of cover, it's not a one-size-fits-all practice that suits everybody's budget, work, practice and lifestyle. Thanks for opening up this discussion.

Thanks brother for the video! Music inspires me. I don’t make music. But it inspires me to make videos (cinematics), go to the gym, do my work, and chase my dreams. Thank you 🙏
