My mother definitely helped me hear the voice of the Lord long before I was even a member. There was a time close to my high school years when one of my family members was heavy into addiction and causing contention almost constantly, and I told my mom, "I hate him." My mother urged me to refrain from using the word "hate" and explained that having love for someone is not the same as condoning bad behavior or defending it. That moment was truly an example to me of the light she had and even though she was not active in the Church at the time, I am grateful that she was still receptive enough to hear Him a little and pass it along to me.

My mother would tell me to do something. If I did what she asked, all was alright. If not, there were consequences.
She asked me to protect my younger brother and sister from bullies when I was about six. She patched me up after I protected my siblings from a fourth grade bully. Then she had a talk with the bullie’s mother. Things were a lot better after that. So, honor and respect your mother.

It's funny, I feel the same way about President Eyring's loving counsel as he did about his mother's. I can hear the sincerity and "in touch with Heaven" in his voice.
