Evgeny was one of the first martyrs I read about when I became Orthodox. I am also related to the famous martyr Toribio Romo who was a priest that was killed in the Cristero war

Theres another one that happened during the Columbine shooting of 1999.

Rachel Joy Scott was one of the first victims of the columbine shooting. She was a devoted Christian who dedicated her life to serving God by spreading his word around at school and being kind to people through the Lord. When she became more outspoken about her Christianity she started to lose friends and be ridiculed for her faith. But that did not stop her because she still loved Jesus with all her heart. Then one day she attempted to befriend the culprits of the shooting by trying to show them the love that God has to offer. They denied her help. Then sometime later the shooting happened. They went into the classroom and found Rachel they shot her once then made other rounds around the school. They then came back to Rachel's body to make sure she was dead. Rachel was infact not dead and still alive. Then the shooting told her to deny Christ and she refused. That led to the final bullet which was fired into her head to kill her. Her story is absolutely heart breaking but led to a non-profit organization that helps advocate for teen mental health.

Correction: although in theory you had to be an atheist in the soviet union, in practice you couldn’t be an orthodox christian, you were able to be a catholic since the vatican would make quite a fuss if the catholics were targeted, and you were able to be a muslim since targeting muslims often bring terrorist attacks, the reason you couldn’t have been an orthodox was because the orthodox church was in russia/soviet union and quickly fell under pressure from the state
