Removing Excess Epoxy With a Handheld Router

Unfortunately, the back side of this table top is full of knot holes, so I filled them with epoxy. I used a bit of a unique setup with the router to be able to quickly remove 95% of the epoxy reducing the amount of sanding needed, speeding up the process!

Good thing you marked them so you didn’t forget where they were

I love these guys now that say “oh you can do this at home”. Sitting there with thousands of dollars of festool tools in there shop. Most home owners can’t afford these tools.

Great example of using the right tool for a job that didn't need to be done anyway.

Think I would prefer knots to black blobs.

The mayhem epoxy has unleashed upon the woodworking world cannot be understated

Festool makes really nice looking equipment. I always think about buying some. Then I remember the price.

I like to mix 50/50 walnut fine dust from sander (taken from darkest pieces) with wood glue and fill those knots. Looks super realistic like it’s a natural knot once it dries. Dries much darker than the paste looks.

It’s the underside…. Wood glue with sand dust will suffice. This is when you have tool much invested in tools so have to justify its purchase.

If that had been my table and you had filled in the knot holes with anything but a clear epoxy so that the knots still show, I would have been super pissed even if it is the underside. Knots add character to wood grain.

Heat gun and a putty knife works beautifully.

The thing that most finish people would do is use a plainer for underside with intense pay attention to detail to dust collection and create a similar color back fill like on hardwood floors or furniture repair but if black is your thing, go for it .a few passes with device will give plenty of mixing dust to work with

Why are you repairing the under side of the table top?

Wear a respirator aswell, epoxy is toxic to breath in, yes the shop vacuum sucks up most of it but not all of it

Good technique. I’d be interested in seeing a side by side comparison between (1) epoxy or dark brown & CA glue, and (2) the old timey wood glue & sawdust mix. I’d be curious to see which method produces the best result. I may just have to try this experiment myself.

Set a piece of printer paper under the cutting head let it rest there when tightening it all gown to set the height, then check against the edge to be sure it wont drag on the work piece. This can help getting a bit closer to the top without needing to eyeball the cutting depth.

Love the Festool vac overhead extension

You can do the same thing by glueing, taping or otherwise fastening 2 blocks of equal thickness to the base of your router on either side of the bit then lowering the bit until it just touched the surface of the base material you want to clean up. I've customarily used hot melt glue but turners tape is even better.
