Zaporozchy is the name for the Ukrainian cossack group. It refers to the island fortress on the Dnipro River. Porohy means rapids, and the island was "beyond the rapids".

As much as I enjoyed the Ride of the Rohirrim in theatre first time I saw it, nothing beats the old 'cast of thousands' movies we had long before CGI. Zaporoški!

What an inspiration this was, to a 9 year old, as I sat in the theater.

This film was a staple school holiday film at the local cinema 60 years ago and the music still gives me shivers.

Somewhat of a forgotten fact concerning this film. It was filmed almost entirely in Argentina. The cossacks where actually local gauchos. Kudos to old Hollywood.

One of the best "sleeper" war movies of the 60's. One of Yul Brenners' greatest roles that few know or remember. Dramatic role for Tony Curtis.

I remember this movie well as I was living in West Germany (Soest) when it came out and my parents took me to the Canadian Army cinema to see it. The love story was a bit painful but they certainly don't film many movies like this scene with real, not CGI, riders!

Regardless, can you imagine what the sound and vibration of such a large movement of horses would be like. Must have been awesome to observe.

Listening to the horses it makes me think of the greatest cavalry charge in history at Vienna in 1683.

Taras Bulba for any old Cossacks who'd be interested was a nearly legend of Australian horse racing in the early 70s.
If it wasn't for this fact I'd never known about the Cossacks, the film, the novel. Amazing 😍

Man, those horses are going to be knackered whenever they get where they're going!

Saw this as a child with my mother. Yul Brynner was terrific. Tony Curtis, not so much. This was the era of El Cid, Ben Hur, and Lawrence of Arabia. Now everything is crap CGI.

I ride a horse everyday for my living, glad to see a real cavalry maneuver even if it’s just for a movie, bravo

Horses running at top speed for that distance would be spent before getting to the battle. US cavalry walked beside their horses half the time.
