I think it might be caused by a mixture of back issue, feeling the need to stretch suddenly, and wanting to find a position where you can feel comfortable and exposed while helping the issues previously stated. (I have back and hip issues and enjoy the feeling of stretching but don't dedicate any specific time to stretching and tend to get into the position shown in the images and can feel this position relieving pain, weight, pressure, and can even cool me down on hotter days personally so I think that's at least a few reasons as to why we do this..)

As a father of four it is comfortable. It stretches the back out which feels good, it eliminates 99% of child elbow drops that you would get if you were laying flat and it keeps excess pressure off a full tummy! Also keeps kids away from rear area because the cannon is loaded with methane and easy to fire.
