Removing MMR from Competitive Play in Overwatch

Asking for an MMR Reset in Overwatch is nothing new, but now some people go one step further. Without understanding the MMR System, they ask for an outright removal of it.

Before we can discuss the ramifications of an MMR Reset or Removal, we need to understand a few things. How does matchmaking work in Overwatch? Or, how does competitive work in large?

Your Matchmaking Rating plays an important role in your Overwatch Ranked Experience, and as much as we like to curse the game and say Overwatch Matchmaking is broken- Things are definitely a little more complicated than many think. While we're at it, let's have MMR in Overwatch explained (again).

So let's discuss.

I'M SORRY FOR REPEATING MYSELF SO OFTEN there's just been a lot of new faces coming to the channel recently and I can't expect everyone to have watched every video I made ;-;

context is so important for this discussion specifically

I think the biggest problem in Overwatch is that people value the little rank icons more than actually improving at the game.

I have seen many comments claiming that people need to just accept that the people they are playing with are of the same skill level as them. For me this is furthest from the truth. I have a far less than 50% winrate, and I am constantly in games where every player, on both teams, is far better in skill than me. It's gotten to the point that I feel like I have no influence on the matches outcome. My problem with competitive has never been "I'm playing with people who are far below me". On a side note, almost every game I am in is one team steam rolling the other. That's not competitive in any sense of the term.

I was at 2700 last season. I’m currently sitting at 2100 this season and it’s making me want to pull my hair out. I just keep losing. And my stats are good I’m just losing losing losing. It doesn’t feel good to play this game anymore but there’s no other games like it.

New sub. Just wanted to share that your level-headed approach and reasonable stances focused on info got you the sub so keep it up.

For some reason the game never feels close for me. If we win, we rush our opponents, but if we loose it feels like I deserve to be way lower than my opponents. Even the 50% win chance won't change this.

This is the problem with MMR, you are only that MMR on the heroes you actually play. A top500 Lucio is not top500 level on every hero in the game, far from it. MMR assumes otherwise.

Instead of MMR, it should match teams to find players with enough hero pool to cover building decent 2-2-2 comps at least. THAT is 50% win chance if they are in the same SR range.

You would also have to factor in that it's equally as likely that the enemy team ends up with a bad comp, so it should even out over time. And also it means the system is rewarding some flexibility in single queue. If you only can play hero and is useless at anything else, it's not the systems fault that you are completely inflexible. If you only play one thing you are handicapping yourself unless you are playing in a group.

I can play heroes in every category, so I usually fill up the empty roles on my teams. Most commonly that means that I'll be heading. The problem is that my teammates usually lack game sense in the roles they have chosen (i.e. the tanks don't push at all or push too much, or the squishies keep leaving their positions) in the end I can't do much because my teams consist predominantly of people who won't benefit the team as a whole

Wait. A lot of people are asking for the removal of MMR system?
That's so incredibly stupid. What are they thinking? Are they even thinking at all?

You say in the video at one point that removing mmr from competitive would result in plats and gms being placed in the same game, and if you believe that, then I think you've misunderstood what people mean when they say they want mmr removed from competetive. I think what people mean when they say mmr should be removed, is that matchmaking in competetive should be based purely on the visible sr, rather than an invisible mmr that works behind the scenes. The idea is that if all players in a match are just of a similar sr then one of three things happen. Either you're as skilled as everyone else and the match is fair, or you're better than everyone else, giving you an above 50% win chance which would eventually result in you gaining sr until your win chance reaches 50%, or you're worse than everyone else and should have a below 50% chance of winning, eventually resulting in you losing sr until your win chance reaches 50%. I think the issue is that people feel that the only thing an invisible mmr can do is disrupt this and thus push your sr further away from your actual skill level.
Now I don't know if this is actually true because I, like everyone else, don't know exactly how the mmr in this game works or what the ranked system would look like if it was based purely on sr, but that quote just suggests that you don't understand exactly what you're arguing against (or you're misrepresenting it on purpose, but I have no reason to believe that is the case), and arguing against an opinion nobody holds is at best pointless and at worst misleading people into believing that those who are unhappy with the mmr system all just want matches to put 12 people together at complete random, which as far as I know, isn't a very popular opinion.

Happy birthday Cliff! I don't really have much input on this other than me thinking that a 50% chance to win or lose sounds inherently balanced to me, and then that chance getting reworked depending on all the different human factors one has to take into consideration when playing OW, like different compositions you and the enemy team play, map pool, solo queue or LFG, etc. And I don't get why people meme things that makes the actual value and impact of what's discussed get undervalued because of the memes.

Ppl don't like the idea that the ppl they are playing with have the same amount of skill as them -_- and so they make many excuses and make comments like removing mmr to feel validated and why they are entitled to be at a skill rating way above their actual skill rating

So many people have an opinion or gripe about the rating system but I see no ideas better than what is already out there.
It's bigger than us, it's working in the best way they know how to work it, and they are constantly improving this 3 year old game. I'd say we should be stoked that Blizzard has done so much for their fans.

I think you hit the easiest solution: publicize the formula/algorithm/etc. Why should it be a secret? Why have a test on material you never learned; why make people perform without even a clue what the criteria are? If it’s so fair and functional why hide it? That sounds like it’s exploitable if one learns how. And how can we tweak/correct it or even give useful feedback without knowing how it works? That would be a useful step to fixing the issue.
