Unpopular opinion: Shadow's peak (and best writing) was in Sonic 06: where he was faced with the similar promises of revenge and answers but turned them down and actively fought the villain offering them because his identity was solidified and he knew who he was: the hero the world needs but doesn't appreciate.

There was an unspeakable amount of hype I had for this boss battle when I was a kid that I still have. The way the boss theme kicks in, the camera work and the quote Shadow delivers. It screams "epic showdown." I was just upset we as players could never take advantage of the Chaos Control perk to save ourselves.
