Finally, it had been done. No one would have to wail out in grief anymore. Her friends, family, and lovers could now live in peace. Forever.

The lilies gathered around her like fallen snow, and the sun warmed her skin. It was a beautiful scene and she felt content just to lay there. Alas, she knew that things would not remain that way for long. She was a sacrifice; a pure heart to appease a tainted beast in its rampage. If she did not preform this rite...

No, she mustn't think such things. It would only make her remember all the suffering that had already come to past. Instead she looked over to the crowd of solemn figures that didn't dare meet her glance. Only those who she held closest to her heart met her eyes. She wished she could comfort them in some way, let them know one last time that she loved them, but all she could do was smile.

It would be over soon. The beast would come and she would be ready. It would seek a soul to feast upon and find a flame that will consume it instead.

For even though a candle will break the darkness, it can last only so long. It's wick will disappear and its wax will melt. Then it will be gone from this life. Such as was her destiny as a short candle to burn bright but short so that her people could burn a little longer.
